The authors of Transitions draw on more than a decade of experience with computer-supported writing instruction, as well as on two research projects, to explore the changes teachers make as they move between computer-supported and traditional composition classrooms. Transitions captures the richness of teaching and learning in these classroom settings by considering qualitative data (classroom observations, teacher interviews, teacher logs, e-mail archives) as well as quantitative data (teacher-student contacts, student-student contacts, demographic information). Drawing on their expertise as teachers, teacher-trainers, and administrators of computer classrooms, the authors translate their research findings into practical suggestions for teachers in both traditional and computer writing classrooms.

"This book nicely sums up what we have learned about teaching in computer-equipped writing classrooms, and makes that sum available to us in a readable and engaging manner. In 1989, I found Cynthia Selfe's Creating a Computer-Supported Writing Facility a useful book. Today, writing teachers will find Transitions a useful book."

Charles Moran

"Transitions is a much-needed addition to the growing body of literature on computers and writing. The theoretical framework and the research provide an insightful contribution to the scholarly literature on computers and writing. Not only does Transitions provide evidence in support of the value of computer-supported writing classrooms, but it helps both professionals and beginners achieve the results that are possible in such classroom environments."

Janet Bacon
Arizona State University

"Transitions brings teacher voices and thinking to the foreground in ways that will further the teaching effectiveness and professionalism of teachers who are learning to explore tomorrowÕs classrooms."

Will Hochman
University of Southern Colorado
