Ann Kaplan, Looking for the Other: Feminism, Film and the Imperial Gaze Additional articles made available through xerox or pdf files Course Objectives: In this course we will use an interdisciplinary approach to the concept of difference as it relates to contemporary visual representations of cultural and social categories of identity, especially, race, ethnicity, and gender. A basic premise of our approach in this class is that such categories are not isolated and static but are constantly constructed in relation to one another; they are thus dynamic, contextual, embedded in relations of power, and highly contested. Our readings and discussions will address issues such as power, oppression, privilege, racism, sexism, the construction of whiteness, and hybridity. as well as issues specific to visual representation such as myth and iconicity, the body and the gaze, commodity culture and fetishism, and the production of meaning, and spectatorship. Although we will look at a variety of visual media, our focus will be on narrative visual media, particularly cinema. Requirements: In addition to readings and screenings, in this course you will complete four types of assignments: Visual examples to be brought to class and presented in response to readings or screenings A mid-term take-home essay to be completed during week 7 (week of Oct. 16) A brief (approx. 15 minute) presentation of an article or book chapter that is relevant to the topic of visual representation and difference and that is not included on our syllabus. Your presentation should begin with a summary of the main points/argument of the reading followed by your comments about the article and its connection to other work we have read or other work in the field. I will provide a list of possible texts, but you may also choose your own text in consultation with me. (Weeks 6-12) A seminar paper (14-16 pages, double-spaced) that analyzes a particular visual text (movie, photograph, ad, website, etc.) in terms of its representation of ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, class, age, and/or other social categories. Your paper should draw on selected readings and screenings from the course as well as other relevant critical texts and images.
