Roxane Gay Chosen to Speak to State Legislature

Roxane Gay, a Ph.D. student specializing in Technical Communication, has been chosen as one of six graduate students representing MTU during Graduate Education Week at the State Capitol Building in Lansing. Ms. Gay will report to state representatives and government officials on her research into how engineers are constructed as writers.

Community Literacy Journal Wins Best New Journal Award

The Community Literacy Journal has been awarded Best New Scholarly Journal for 2008 by the the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ).

Michigan Tech Faculty Awarded NSF grant

Drs. Michael Bowler, Ted Lockhart and Jingfang Ren from the Humanities department, along with Dr. Susan Amato-Henderson (Cognitive and Learning Sciences), Dr. Joseph Holles (Chemical Engineering), Dr. Tom Drummer (Mathematical Sciences) and Dr. Debra Charlesworth (Graduate School), were awarded a three-year, ~$300,000 NSF grant to study Ethics Education in Science and Engineering. They will be studying the role that moral motivation and ethical sensitivity play in the responsible conduct of research among multi-national graduate students in science and engineering.

Dr. Patty Sotirin Assumes Editorship of Women and Language

The Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender (OSCLG) and Women and Language recently announced the appointment of Patty Sotirin as the next editor of the journal Women and Language. Her term begins with the Spring 2010 issue.

Dr. Natalia Crespo Receives Literary Prize

Natalia Crespo, a visiting assistant Professor of Spanish in the Department of Humanities, was awarded first prize in a literary contest (the Premio Victoria Urbano de Creación) sponsored by the Asociación Internacional de Literatura y Cultura Femenina Hispánica. The prize, recently announced at the association's international conference in Atlanta, honors Crespo's short story "Dulce de leche Agendatz," a satire of certain cultural assumptions and social expectations about women, both in the Hispanic world and in US society.

Roxane Gay Receives Diversity Award Scholarship

Rhetoric and Technical Communication graduate student Roxane Gay received the Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication's Diversity Award Scholarship at its annual conference in Minneapolis. Chosen from a highly qualified group of applicants, Roxane is the first to receive this award. Fellow RTC Graduate Students Jim Nugent, Erik Hayenga, Laurence José, and Jim and Casey Rudkin presented papers and chaired panels as well.

Michael Moore Receives Teaching Award

The Michigan Tech Center for Teaching, Learning, and Faculty Development today presented Humanities Instructor Michael Moore with the Fredrick D. Williams Instructional Innovation Award.

Dr. Randy Freisinger Receives Teaching Award

Humanities Professor Randall Freisinger recently received Michigan Tech's Distinguished Teaching Award for 2008 in the category of professor. The award includes a cash prize of $2500.

Moe Folk Receives Exceptional Graduate Student Scholar Award

PhD Candidate Moe Folk was recently named Exceptional Graduate Student Scholar by Michigan Tech's Graduate Student Council. The award is given to graduate students who have best excelled in academic pursuits. Winners are chosen based upon their performance in the classroom and their contributions to research activities, publications, presentations, and other scholarly works.

Christine Garceau Receives Outstanding Visual Artist Award

PhD Student Christine Garceau has received an award for Outstanding Visual Artist of 2008 from the Marquette Arts and Culture Center. The MACC awards honor individuals, organizations and businesses that have positively impacted the quality of life in Marquette. Christine will receive her award at a ceremony at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette on Friday, May 16th at 7:00 P.M., preceded by a reception from 5:30-7:00pm.

Michigan Tech Writing Center Wins Award

The Michigan Tech Writing Center is the only writing center to receive the National Writing Program of Excellence Award in 2007, and the second writing center to be recognized in the history of the award.
