Applying to the Rhetoric & Technical Communication Program
Applying to Graduate Programs in Rhetoric & Technical Communication is a multi-step process. Please note carefully which documents are to be sent to the Graduate School Office and which to the RTC Program.
Application Deadline
In order to receive full consideration for Departmental financial assistance beginning the following Fall semester, you must complete the application process by January 10th. Applications may be considered after the January 10th deadline, though financial support will be awarded based on limited availability. To determine the availability of funding after the deadline, contact Graduate Director Elizabeth Flynn.
Part 1 — Applying to the Michigan Tech Graduate School
Send the materials below to: The Michigan Tech Graduate School Office, Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, MI 49931-1295.
| Step 1 | The completed Michigan Tech Graduate School's Application for graduate study. You may submit the application online, or print and mail it to the Graduate School Office. Neither method requires a fee. |
| Step 2 | Your official transcripts. |
| Step 3 | Your Statement of Purpose. (This will be carefully considered by the RTC Graduate Committee.) |
| Step 4 | A signed copy of the application signature page. If you applied electronically (step 1), you'll need to download the application, print, and mail the signature page. |
| Step 5 | Your official TOEFL scores. Preferred scores: 600 PBT/ 250 CBT/ 100 IBT. (Applicable only if English is not your native language.) |
Part 2 — Applying to the RTC Program
Send the materials below to: Director of Graduate Studies, Department of Humanities, Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, MI 49931-1295.

| Step 2 | A writing sample (pdf) that illustrates your work and intellectual interests. |
| Step 3 | Three completed recommendation forms. |
Note that the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not required by either the Graduate School Office or the RTC Graduate Committee. Please contact Program Assistant Marjorie Lindley with questions about the application process.
