In addition to graduate and undergraduate programs, the Humanities Department at Michigan Tech also houses several special programs that connect it professionally to scholars and students across the country. The Humanities Department is home to the International Center for Scholarship in Technical, Professional, and Scientific Communication at Michigan Technological University, a multidisciplinary center for scholarship in the practice and pedagogy of scientific and technical communication Under the direction of Robert Johnson, the department is part of the Preparing Future Faculty initiative. As one of six humanities graduate programs in the country chosen by NCTE, the initiative works to develop innovative approaches for the preparation of graduate students to meet the demand of ever-changing academic environment. Blue Ice Anthology, a literary magazine sponsored by the Department of Humanities and circulated mainly within the Michigan Tech University community, publishes literary nonfiction essays written by graduate students in the department's Rhetoric and Technical Communication Program. Once graduate student writers have completed their essays, undergraduate students in the department's Scientific and Technical Communications Program design and produce the magazine during the spring semester. Published since 1987, Blue Ice has an average press run of 500 copies and currently appears every other year. An online issue of Blue Ice Anthology can be found here.
Finally, the department sponsors an STC Arts Enterprise Team, which gives students the opportunity to manage a communications firm with both on- and off-campus clients. Team members collaborate on web-site designs, technical documentation, consulting, and a wide range of print & digital media development. |
