Placement Tests
At the beginning of each semester, Placement Tests are administered which help us to situate students in the appropriate level courses.
ESL Placement
- Students who test at the Beginning or Intermediate level enroll only in ESL courses. Depending upon their status, students may be eligible to enroll at the University as part-time students, while others may be required to enroll as full-time students.
- Those students who place at the Low Advanced or Advanced Level may take one or two academic courses toward a graduate or undergraduate degree while taking one or two ESL courses, depending upon their test scores in specific areas.
- Students who place at the Academic Support Level on the placement test may enroll in courses in reading/writing or listening/speaking, depending upon their specific ESL needs.
Students progress through the ESL Program in the following manner:
- Beginning level: 12 credits of reading, writing, listening/speaking
- Intermediate level: 12 credits of reading, writing, listening/speaking
- Low advanced level: 8 credits of ESL, 4 credits of academic courses
- Advanced level: 4 credits of ESL and 8 credits of academic courses
- Academic Support level: 1-3 credits of ESL, 7-12 credits of academic courses
