SMILE: Summer Intensive Language Experience for International Students

SMILE provides intensive instruction in English language and American culture and prepares international students for further course work in English as a Second Language (ESL), undergraduate, or graduate study. Students receive rigorous classroom and laboratory instruction and an introduction to local community and culture. All new international students who want to improve their English are encouraged to participate in SMILE before taking courses in the fall. Applicants must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score to be considered.

Components of the SMILE Program

English as a Second Language Instruction

  • Reading and Vocabulary
  • Writing and Grammar
  • Listening and Speaking

American Cultural Experiences

  • Tour a copper mine and museum
  • Tour other local museums
  • Tour  local historical sites
  • Attend local cultural festivals
  • Picnic on the beach at Lake Superior
Additional Recreational Activities: Enjoy soccer, volleyball, hiking, biking, swimming, rollerblading, skateboarding, and more.
