LIVING OFF-CAMPUS

Living off-campus was another big experience for me.  I have a small apartment about 10 minutes walk from the campus.  Very small place, but exactly what I need it.  I wanted a small place to keep it clean.  It is more like a dorm, but with a lot more freedom.  To be more specific, I can go from one wall to the other one in like five big steps.  The positive thing about it is that I keep it clean the majority of the time because misplaced items make the apartment look like a mess.

There were a lot of first times for me after I moved out of my house.  I have never cooked, so I needed to learn because that was the only way to I could survive.  I went to Wal-Mart and I bought anything that look appetizing to me.  From honey to chicken to jelly.  It was easy until I found out I bought a bunch of stuff that I couldn’t mix together to make a decent meal. I called my mother and told her about the situation.  I also used the internet for recipes.  One of my favorite’s recipes is a traditional Cuban plate.  I’m talking about black beans, white rice, roasted pork, fried plantains (called “tostones” (fried plantains)), and of course salad.

Well I only knew how to make the salad, and it wasn’t the most appetizing salad I have tasted.  So I had to push the panic button.  I called my mother and asked her for some advice.  I also went online to look for more recipes.  I knew I couldn’t make my favorite meal right away, but I wanted to start with easier meals.  A couple weeks after that incident, I developed my cooking skills and start making decent meals.  That was when I started inviting friends over on Sundays to show them what I learned. I’m still not ready for my favorite recipe, but I’m getting there.  It was a great experience, and now I can help my future wife to cook.
