From Young Lady to Woman

“What we are is God's gift to us. What we become is our gift to God.”
--Eleanor Powell

Growing up is hard, let’s be honest. But through my experiences I feel more prepared to be successful in this world. One thing that many people take for granted is their family. Now as a woman, I realize how blessed I am to have a “normal” family. I have never experienced divorce, abuse, or any of the other tragedies that define kids these days.

At twenty-two years old, I think a lot more about how I was raised. My mother instilled values of how to treat people, demand respect, guided me in developing self-confidence, how to be a leader, and how to love unconditionally. My father showed us how to work-hard, develop a never-quit attitude, and respect your elders. There has always been extended family to raise me as well, (you know how they used to say “it takes a village to raise a child,”).

I have been blessed to have that experience.  When you are a teenager, many girls “hate” their mother; and with me being just like my mother, it was much easier to clash with her often.  That’s where her best friend came in, my Aunt Netta. She is an old school woman; she taught me how to respect my elders in a way my family never established. Aunt Netta and my mom have been close since I was in 3rd or 4th grade. She was there for me to tell me when I was out of place when I was fighting with my mom or siblings and most importantly I never felt as if I couldn’t tell her anything, as sometimes  happens with your mother.

She is one of the most valuable relationships that I have.
