It is hard to believe that I have completed my third year at Tech. Time has really flown by. It seems like it was only a few months ago that I graduated from Cass Technical High School. I remember when graduation rolled around, I was ready...

Ready to graduate, ready to move on, ready to make new friends and most of all ready to be an adult.    My freshmen year was a very interesting one; I enjoyed it. I learned a few life lessons and it truly set up the framework for the rest of the time I have spent at Tech.

It is an interesting story as to how I chose Michigan Tech. Needless to say; it was not my first choice school. It was University of Pennsylvania. I really wanted to attend Penn; however, I was not accepted. Bitterly, I moved on to my second choice school, Xavier University of Louisiana. After visiting the school during Mardi Gras, I became pretty excited about the school. Apart from being in New Orleans, Xavier is number one in the country for sending African-Americans to medical school. Since attending medical school was my ultimate goal at the time, Xavier seemed like the perfect school for me. So... how did I end up at Tech?

My brother was jealous that my mom took me to New Orleans to visit Xavier, so he insisted that we take a trip to visit Tech, since it was his first choice school. So to be fair, we took a trip to Houghton after we took all of our real vacations for the summer. When I went on the campus tour with my brother, there was a certain je ne sais quoi that attracted me to it and made me feel like this was the place I was suppose to be. After much thought, I changed my mind about Xavier and decided that I wanted to come here. I think that I may still attend Xavier for pharmacy school.

If you have not noticied already I am a pretty indecisive person and I change my mind fairly quickly. I am currently on my third major. I started as a Bio-medical engineering major. I never really liked engineering. So why did I pick that major? I figured that since I was at an engineering school, I would give engineering a try. However after failing the 3D Spatial Visualization exam during freshmen orientation and earning my first   "C" at Tech in that class,   I decided that engineering was not for me. Besides, although I tended to do well in math classes when I applied myself, I did not and still do not like math. So I changed my major to Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), which I really did not like. I found the subject matter very interesting, but I could never envision myself working in the lab with someone else's blood, urine, and/or feces. Also, I did not feel that I quite fit in with the people in my major. It is awkward when you have a set of classes with the same ten people, but no one ever talks to or sits next to me. All they would do is look at me funny. I never understood why.   I am not an anti-social person, so this really struck me as strange. Thinking back, I should have asked someone who was staring at me why they were. I hope it was not because I was the only African-American in the class.
