The Modern Language Lab offers students the opportunity to become more familiar with our modern language offerings. French, German, Spanish, and Ojibwe are currently taught through the Department of Humanities. The lab is open to students who are enrolled in modern language classes or who have otherwise been granted permission by an instructor to use the equipment and language materials. The lab offers audio cassette players and instructional tapes that complement classroom learning and are especially useful in improving pronunciation skills. The video players, including a multi-standard VCR system, allow students to view instructional videos and foreign films. In addition to these more traditional tools for language learning, the lab features both Macintosh and IBM compatible computers which run modern language software in French, German, and Spanish. The Modern Language Lab also offers other resources such as newspapers, magazines, and dictionaries. Through one of the TV systems, students can tune into SCOLA, a cable channel offering programs in foreign languages 24 hours a day. In addition to language tutoring, students may ask the lab staff for assistance operating the equipment and selecting materials for language learning. The lab is staffed by students who have excelled in upper-level modern language courses or are native speakers. |
