MTU is served daily by Northwest Airlink from Detroit or Minneapolis through the Houghton County Memorial Airport (airport code CMX) in Hancock, Michigan. The nationwide reservations number for Northwest Airlines is 800-225-2525, or book online at www.nwa.com.

The airport offers car rentals from National -- call the desk directly at (906) 482-6655 to reserve a vehicle, should you decide you would like one. Vehicles are not necessary in Houghton, unless you are averse to walking short distances (a mile or less).

Conference personnel will arrange to meet participants at the Houghton County Airport on Monday, May 30 and Tuesday, May 31, 2005 (also, earlier and later, if desired). Contact Alex Ilyasova to make pickup and/or special arrangements. We will also return participants to the airport at the conclusion of the institute. Taxi service is available from the airport (but is not available for flights arriving after 10pm) for approximately $10.00 per person; contact Neil's Taxi at (906) 487-5515.

Tips for travel to the Keweenaw
Houghton County Airport (CMX) is located on the border of the cities of Hancock and Calumet, and is only 10 minutes north of Houghton. It is the only airport that serves Houghton County and has 4-6 flights per day. Detroit is 10-12 hours southwest of Houghton, so driving from there might be a bit far for you. The next closest (somewhat larger) airports to Houghton are

• K.I. Sawyer Airport in Marquette, MI (MQT), 2 hours east, and which has jet service daily from Chicago,
• Green Bay, WI, 3.4 hours south
• Appleton, WI, 4 hours south
• Minneapolis (MSP), 6 hours southwest
• Madison, WI, 7 hours southwest

It is advisable when flying to carry any necessary items (such as toiletries, medication, a pair of clean underwear, etc.) with you. Often, luggage is transported on a later flight due to busy summer flight schedules. The airport in Houghton, however, is very accommodating in bringing your luggage to you whenever possible. Even with the cozy, small-town community feel of Houghton County, we have such amenities tucked away as Wal-mart, JCPenney, and 24-hour convenience stores should you need anything while you are here.
