Research Interests

Professor Slack takes a cultural studies approach to understanding communication, technology, and the environment. Her work refines and pushes the boundaries of what it means to do cultural studies. In so doing, it challenges us to think in new ways about communication, the digital environment, and the natural environment.

Her current research addresses theories of new media. In particular, she aspires to remap the new media environment from a cultural studies perspective. As part of that project she is co-authoring (with J. Macgregor Wise) a 2nd edition of their award-winning book, Culture and Technology: A Primer.  The 2nd edition will more fully address contemporary culture and the digital environment.
