Improv Group Hit's Walker Theatre Next Week
by Cyndi Burtch -- Senior Feature Writer
- Described as "a zany group of kind and loving people," The Troupe brings laughter and fun once again in their 6th Annual Campus Comedy Show for a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night performance on May 8th, 9th, and 10th in Walker Theatre.
- Directed by Dr. Suzanne Stephens of the Fine Arts Department, The Troupe is made up of 15 Michigane Tech students. Dressed in brightly colored T-shirts and baggy pants, this energetic group will capture intrest from all. The Troupe is especially unique as they use nothing but their bodies and white masks in one skit for props.
- The skits performed for the 6th Annual Campus Comedy Show have a consistent theme of making fun of television with games and other skits in between. The skits range from such topics as the Roadrunner cartoon, high school Jeopardy, a soap opera scene, a court room scene, and various commercials. The Troupe also takes suggestions before the performance for improv skits on proffesions, vocations, or places.
- Special guest Joyce Farr, the percussionist from "Cry on Cue" and Michigan TEch student, will be joining The Troupe for a variety of scenes. Stephens may also be seen herself in a couple of scenes as she likes to surprise her students by joining them. Stephens calls The Troupe her "second family" and thoroughly enjoys directing them.
- Along with their Annual Campus Show, The Troupe also performs in a Children's Show each year, can be seen in a variety of workshops, and recently performed with the Wind Symphony in "Cabaret". They also regularly have a spring break tour but were not able to tour this year due to Stephens being gone on sabbatical.
- The Troupe formed seven years ago from interest that came out of one of Stephens' acting classes. The students were having too much fun to have it end so they started meeting regularly after the class was over, and eventually they formed The Troupe. The groupe has stayed strong and unified over the years. Generally, once a student joins they stay with the group until they graduate receiving one credit per term having lots of fun.
- Tickets for the 8:00 p.m. performances are available at the Memorial Union Box Office, the SDC Ticket Office, and at the door. For more information, contact the Fine Arts Department at 487-2067.
