The Daughters are a highly selective group. Their focus is on the voice and singing, but they also choose members based on musical talent. No one is quite sure how many Daughters there are, but there are not that many, considered how selective they are. Many consider the Daughters to be leaders in the musical fields. For a Toreador to host a concert given by a Daughter, is worth a lot of clan respect, or influence. Since all of the clan are artists, they do not spend a lot of time in large groups. They are usually developing their music. Gatherings of clan are rare and much like a concert atmosphere. Everyone is performing to outdo everyone else, there is a bit of competition that goes on. NO one outside of the clan would be able to tell the rank of a Daughter within her clan, unless they were told. Most members within the clan don’t deal with rank, they deal in musicianship. The better musicians are held in more respect than those still learning. Because of the exclusivity, Daughters are taught not to teach their special arts outside of the clan.

Beginning in July of 1989, Sons of Discord began to disappear at an alarming rate. Within a year, 70% of them were gone. This is something that has been dubbed the purge. There are rumors that the Daughters hunt Sons of Discord, but anyone who knows isn’t talking. All most of the Daughters know is that they are to report men using Melpominee to their elders. There is also the fact that men don’t sound quite right in the Celestial Song. Other than that no one knows for sure what happened to the Sons. There are rumors that the elders of the Daughters have them locked in a castle in Europe, using them to create discordant harmony within the Celestial Song. There are rumors that the Sons are killed on sight. There are also rumors that they are used as concubines to an elder Toreador somewhere in France. She likes to hear them sing…

When choosing a student, Daughters are extraordinarily picky. They will search out someone who is able to commit their lives to the pursuit of creating a better Song. Mortals are usually embraced, after they have shown their dedication. Other Vampires can be initiated in the ranks of the Daughters, but they must first prove that they are willing to turn their back on the ties to their parent clan, as well as commit themselves fully, for the rest of their unlives, to the Song.

The Celestial Song runs through everything. It is a part of every living and unliving thing in the universe. The Daughters are blessed with the ability to hear this song. To them, it is everywhere. They believe that Malkavians may have touched it at some point, but they were not able to deal with the knowledge that the Song provides. As you hear more of the song and are able to change to song to create a better song, it changes around you. This is the disturbance that that forms around you that only others who have touched the Celestial Song are able to detect.

All Daughters consider men who know Melpominee Sons of Discord. The disturbances created in the celestial song around men feel like they are not in tune with the rest of the chorus. It does not even create harmonic discord. It’s like someone trying to sing opera while the band is playing rap. The two don’t mix.

Anyone who has learned the discipline Melpominee:
This is like having a radar to detect others that also know the discipline. By learning this discipline you tap into the Celestial Chorus, which will change you. This change is evident to other Melpominee users. The higher in levels you get, the farther away someone can be when they first will feel the change in you. On the flip side, the higher in levels you are, the distance that you can detect another Melpominee user grows larger. (Distances have not been determined yet. Please see your Narrator to discuss this.) You must spend at least one turn to tell if there is another Melpominee user in the area, it does not happen as you walk into a room, you actually have to stop and think about it.
This does not work to locate an individual person very well. Because there is just a disturbance of the Celestial Song around you, someone can detect what room you are in, but if there are two people in the room, no one could be certain which is the user of Melpominee. You also do not know how powerful this other person is, you just know how far away you were when you sensed another person who can hear the Celestial song, or at least tap into it occasionally.
Gender also makes a difference in what you sense. If the person you are sensing is the same gender as you, nothing out of the ordinary will happen. If the person you are sensing is of a different gender, you will be able to sense them at a distance as if you were both one level higher than you are. There is more of a disturbance between the two genders effects on the Celestial Song.

Levels of Clan Lore:

Level 1: You know that when you feel a male that has created discord within the Song, you are to report them to your elders. The sons don’t feel quite right to a Daughter. Which means that you should not teach Melpominee to men.

Level 2: Everything in level one plus you know that Sons of Discord were a part of the Daughters of Cacophony at one time, but something happened at they are no longer welcome. Sons and Daughters are not on good terms.

Level 3: Everything level two and below, as well as the knowing that you should eliminate all sons of discord. Men are not permitted to learn the celestial chorus.

Level 4: Everything level three and below, as well as knowing why Sons are hunted. They create horribly discord within the Celestial Song, which is everything to a Daughter. You also know that Daughters essentially hunt the Sons.

Level 5: Everything from level four and below, as well as knowing that they Sons have been hunted to nearly extinction. Their numbers now are equivalent to Salubri. (about seven in the whole world.) You know what happened at the meeting that was held to determine what to do about the discord the men were creating. This experiment in harmony has failed. You also know who were the biggest advocates to hunting the men.
