Sense of purpose
This project is to help you expand your communication and analytical skills beyond mere one on one communication (as you did for the Interviewing Project). Throughout this project you will be analyzing visual rhetoric and communication. I am hoping you will, if anything, be able to use your rhetorical analysis skills to enhance your understanding of more complex situations and be able to question certain situations more complexly.
Everyday we are bombarded with visual messages. Think of an image that particularly moved you… one that drew you to ethically question your stance, as well as the ones participating in the image. An image that quickly comes to my mind is the Enron logo. This image conjures up all sorts of anger, resentment, and frustrations in me with regards to questionable corporation ethics. Images can be powerful messages that can sway our opinions, move us into action, anger us, and even change our fundamental ideals. Sometimes those messages can take various mediums such as a brochure, poster, website, video, and/or podcast.
Moving forward on the class theme of business communication and ethics, you will produce a visual representation (a timeline map) of how a product is produced over time. Your map will include visual depictions of how this particular product is produced and, eventually, winds up in your hands. This is an opportunity to look into certain ethical issues that are prominent in businesses today. It will give you a chance to research more about the way things are made, as well as show you more of what occurs in big businesses.

You will start this project by doing some quick research on four products and their manufacturers. Your products must be complex in nature and the companies must pose some sort of questionable ethical standard (which is important for your argumentative research paper project). You are looking for information on the creation/manufacturing process of this product, i.e. from beginning to end of how this product winds up in your hands. You will pick one of these products to create your map. We will be discussing these in class to make sure everyone in the class picks a different product, as well as each person picks a product that meets the criteria above.
Note: People interested in working for a particular company of a product they’ve found will get priority pick over those who are not interested in working for that company.
- Along with your final timeline map, you are also expected to write a reflective paper to explain what you changed from draft to draft and why you changed it
